Summer time is usually the season you expect to spend time outdoors. But, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy fun outdoor winter activities for the whole family when the weather is cold. In fact, you can choose from any of the following activities to find one your entire family will enjoy despite the frigid temperatures.
Before heading outdoors it’s important to bundle everyone up. Dress in layers, with wool closest to the skin if possible. Be sure everyone has gloves and a hat as heat will escape from your head and extremities first. Don’t forget to use a scarf to keep your faces from being wind chapped.
One of the best ways to get your family outdoors in the winter is to challenge them to a snowball fight. If your family is large, you can split everybody up into teams. Each team can build a fort to hide behind before they begin creating their ammunition. Once the forts are made and everyone has some snowballs ready-made, let the fight begin!
Build a snowman in the front yard. If you’re really creative and have enough snow, why not try making something more elaborate than a snowman? Dogs, cats and castles are good choices. Use your imagination and make an entire family of zoo animals.
Find a hill and go sledding or snow tubing. Of course, you’ll want to choose a hill which isn’t near any roads so you’ll all be safe. There may be some decent hills in local parks or at golf courses which are closed for the winter. You’ll also want to get permission if you’re using your sleds or tubes anywhere the property isn’t public.
Speaking of hills, if you have ski slopes nearby you can take the family to the slopes to go skiing. Not everyone knows how to ski so you may want to all learn together. For those families who do already know how to ski, you might want to give cross-country skiing a chance.
Snowboarding is the last activity you may want to try. Obviously you won’t be able to do the fancy tricks if you’re just getting started, but snowboarding can be great fun for everyone. Why not give it a try and see how well you can do?
A great winter-time activity you may want to try is ice skating if you can find an outdoor rink. Even though you may be tempted to try skating on frozen ponds or lakes, it is better not to do it. The water may not be frozen sufficiently and someone could break through. If there aren’t any outdoor rinks which are safe, you can still enjoy ice skating at an indoor rink.
You don’t have to spend the entire winter indoors. Go ahead and get outside. You can try any of these fun outdoor winter activities for the whole family or come up with some of your own. You’ll all feel great about getting exercise during the winter and spending the time together having fun.
